The United Nations is "not fit for purpose." That’s according to former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, who says that great-power veto politics has left the Security Council unable to respond effectively to today’s wars.
Clark, a former head of the UN Development Programme, spoke to TVP World on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, where leaders debated whether the rules-based order built after 1945 can survive a more openly competitive era.
Clark says the UN’s core weakness is structural: the five permanent members can block action on conflicts touching their strategic interests, meaning “there is someone protecting a protagonist” in many crises.
