All vocals and guitar performance are 100% by me, Dan D. Dirges, no A.I in the audio. To bring the haunting story of "House of the Rising Sun" to life, I’ve used a blend of video of Me performing, AI-assisted imagery and cinematic stock footage (Pixabay).
"House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional American folk-blues classic with no single known author. Its roots are deep and mysterious, likely originating from 16th- or 17th-century English ballads like "The Unfortunate Rake" or "Matty Groves" before being transplanted to the Appalachian mountains.
The earliest known recording was titled "Rising Sun Blues" and was released on September 6, 1933, by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster. Ashley claimed he learned the song from his grandfather. It was later popularized globally by The Animals in 1964.While many know the 1964 version by The Animals, the song dates back much further, first recorded by Clarence Ashley in 1933. This is my tribute to that timeless, dark New Orleans spirit. Bob Dylan and Dave Van Ronk have also recorded this song.
I sing and perform it on acoustic guitar, fingerpicking style. Stripped down solo performance.
House of the Rising Sun - lyrics
Performed by Dan D. Dirges
There is a house down in New Orleans they call the rising sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy and me, oh Lord, I'm one
My mother was a tailor, she sewed these new blue jean
My father was a gamblin` man, way down in New Orleans
Now the only thing a gambler needs is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's ever satisfied is when he's on a drunk
He fills his glasses up to the brim and passes the cards around
And the only pleasure he gets out of life is rambling from town to town
Oh, mother, tell your children, not to do what I have done
To spend your lives in sin and misery, in the house of the rising sun
I got one foot on the platform and the other foot on a train
I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain
There is a house in New Orleans they call the rising sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy and me, oh Lord, I'm one
