I was honestly bummed when I heard the CN foreign power got removed in transit, but CSX definitely made up for it with a 4-MAC wall of EMD muscle.

🤔 Question for CSX folks / railroaders watching:

Over the last couple months it feels like we’ve been seeing more foreign power getting swapped out before reaching Florida. I get the whole horsepower-hours / power balancing / interchange agreements side of things… but if anyone here works for CSX (or knows the inside baseball), why the recent uptick in replacing foreign power?

Why foreign power sometimes gets removed or swapped

Even though run-through power and horsepower-hour balancing is a big reason foreign locomotives roam, railroads will sometimes swap power due to: maintenance needs, fueling constraints, deadlines for returning leased/foreign units, routing changes, tonnage/traction requirements, shop availability, or to standardize consists for territory where crews, parts, and servicing are easier with home-road power. Sometimes it’s simply about getting the right units to the right place at the right time to keep the network fluid.
