Part 1: Exposure
Shutter Speed
Length of time that the shutter is open
The longer the shutter the more light is let in
The slower the shutter the less light is let in
1/100 = 1/100th of a second = more light than
1/2000 = 1/2000th of a second = less light
1/100 – Brighter
1/1000 – Darker
Aperture/f-stop
The circular opening inside the lens
The bigger the circle, the more light is let in.
F/1.8 is a wide aperture letting more light in = brighter
F/9 is a narrower aperture letting less light in = darker
F/1.8 - brighter
F/9 - darker
ISO
Sensor sensitivity to light
higher the number = brighter
Lower numbers = darker
ISO 100 darker
ISO 1000 Brighter
Using these 3 controls together creates your exposure.

Part 2: Creative consequences of your settings
Shutter Speed
The slower the shutter speed the blurrier the movement.
1/20 can easily blur the movement in your photo
1/1000 makes the movement sharp
The faster the shutter speed the less time there is for blur
Keep slowing down that shutter speed to make Light painting.
Aperture
The bigger the aperture the blurrier the background
OR said another way: shallower the depth of field
Less depth is in focus the larger the opening.
f/1.8 the background is very blurry
f/9 is less blurry and more is in focus
f/1.8 lots of bokeh
f/9 less bokeh
ISO
The higher this number the more digital grain or noise is introduced
Some cameras are worse than others
ISO 100 no grain at all
ISO 16000 lots of digital grain on the image
