There are basically 2 types of Diabetes,
Type 1: This is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, little to no insulin is produced, and glucose cannot enter the cells efficiently. This causes glucose to build up in the bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar levels. People with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin injections
Type 2: This is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for about 90% to 95% of cases. In Type 2 diabetes, the body either becomes resistant to the effects of insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. This can be caused by a combination of genetic factors, lifestyle choices (such as an unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, and obesity), and stress
there is another form of diabetes called gestational diabetes, occurring during pregnancy, if not addressed leads to a chronic condition
it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional in any of this case
Symptoms of diabetes: Regardless of the type, diabetes shares common symptoms, including frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, fatigue, blurry vision, and slow healing of wounds or infections
Diabetes can harm the body in several ways, the long-term effects of uncontrolled diabetes can lead to various complications affecting multiple organs and systems.
1. Cardiovascular Disease: increase in risk of heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral vascular disease (reduced blood flow to the limbs)
2. Nervous system: diabetic neuropathy. Neuropathy damages nerves and can lead to symptoms such as tingling, numbness, pain, and weakness, primarily affecting the feet and hands. It can also affect the nerves that control digestion, leading to problems with the gastrointestinal system
3. Kidneys: diabetic nephropathy, a condition where the kidneys' filtering units are damaged. Over time, this can progress to chronic kidney disease and, in severe cases, kidney failure, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant
4. Eyes: diabetic retinopathy. it damages the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision problems and even blindness if left untreated
Skin: People with diabetes may be more prone to skin infections and slow wound healing.
Feet: neuropathy in the feet, increasing the risk of foot ulcers and infections. If not managed properly, these complications can lead to severe infections and, in some cases, amputation
Reproductive system: Uncontrolled diabetes can affect the reproductive system in both men and women. In men, it may cause erectile dysfunction, while women may experience irregular menstrual cycles and an increased risk of vaginal and urinary tract infections
Immune system: weaken the immune system, making people with diabetes more susceptible to infections, particularly fungal and bacterial infections
