Recueillement, written "at the invitation of F. Florimo for the erection of a monument of Bellini in Naples," never rises above a forte dynamic marking. It opens un poco lento with arpeggios for the first section consisting of major and minor chords for the most part, with augmented sonorities in mm. 3-5. The second section, a brief chorale, leads to a strong cadence on C# major to begin the third section. Liszt experiments with alternate upper register patterns with low chords (mm. 59-68) as he varies the five-note melody that began in mm. 44. A coda based on the B section begins in mm. 77, and the piece ends softly on repeated C#-major chords.
