Dr Jim Donaghey from Ulster University, supported by AHRC investment, worked with skateboarders in Portrush, Northern Ireland to research and support skateboarding culture.
His work recognises skateboarding as a deep-rooted, vital part of the town's cultural heritage and aims to develop diverse strategies to assert the legitimacy of the skateboarding community and empower them towards grassroots action.
Using new and archival footage from local skater and videographer Slaine Browne to document and celebrate the creative practices of Portrush's skateboarding community. This collaboration demonstrates the value of skateboarders as a creative community and their innovative use of public spaces.
AHRC’s Creative Communities programme (2023-2027), led by Programme Director Prof. Katy Shaw, explores how co-created culture can enhance belonging, address regional inequality, deliver devolution, and break down barriers to opportunity with communities in devolved settings across the UK.
