The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Drivers Association (AKMTTDA) held a sit-in protest at Khyndailad on Tuesday, demanding that the state government restrict tourist taxis from outside Meghalaya, particularly from Assam, from ferrying passengers to local tourist destinations.
AKMTTDA president Ricaldinus Dohling stated that the association has been raising this issue since 2023 and has submitted memorandums and participated in two government-formed committees, but without any concrete outcome. Around 35 associations supported the protest.
The association insists that only Meghalaya-registered tourist taxis should be allowed to operate at key tourist sites to protect local drivers' livelihoods and boost the local economy.
AKMTTDA member Balajied Jyrwa criticised the government's inaction despite multiple assurances, including a recent meeting with the Chief Minister. The association proposes that out-of-state taxis should only drop tourists in Shillong, after which they must switch to local taxis to visit tourist spots.
However, other tourism stakeholders have warned that such restrictions could discourage visitors. The state government has not yet expressed support for the AKMTTDA’s demand, and no clear policy has been announced to address the issue.
