THE SONGBIRD: Olga Peretyatko was born into a musical family in Leningrad in 1980. She sang in youth choirs and was at first thought to be a mezzo-soprano. She moved to Berlin in 2001, pursuing vocal studies and performance opportunities. The soprano did well in several competitions and made her debut in Germany in 2004, then joined the opera companies of Hamburg Opera in 2005 and Berlin in 2007. Debuts continued throughout Europe, until her appearances as Stravinsky's "The Nightingale" in Toronto, Aix, New York, Lyon, and Amsterdam brought international attention and led to a series of high profile engagements including Giunia in Salzburg conducted by Marc Minkowski (2013), Gilda at the Vienna Staatsoper (2013), Bellini's Elvira at The Met (2014), and Norina at Covent Garden (2019).
THE MUSIC: Rossini's one-act comic opera premiered in Venice in 1813, the last of a series of five one-act farces he composed for Venice at beginning of his career. Typical for this popular genre, the plot involves a pair of young lovers who use cunning and disguises to overcome the obstacles to their union. Sofia's aria "Ah, donate il caro sposo" features the English horn (cor anglais).
