The Theater of the Oppressed : a rehearsal for the revolution

'The theater itself is not revolutionary: it is a rehearsal for the revolution '; said about the Theater of the Oppressed, its creator Augusto Boal. We met the Activist Group of the Theater of the Oppressed based in Athens, Greece, and we asked them to explain us what this means both in theory and in practice. We learned how a play is built, how they structured it and how it works, and we had the opportunity to see and capture the interaction with the audience. A truly unique experience!

The Theater of the Oppressed was 'invented' in the late '60s in Latin America by Augusto Boal. Today it has spread all over the world with hundreds of groups and lots of passionate fans.

The members of the group, who, as they point out themselves, are not professional actors, construct a theatrical performance that consists of two parts. In the first part, the Model, they present their story which is based on their own experiences and which is a composition of scenes that describe a condition of oppression, well defined and not vague. In the second part, the Forum, the spectators (or spect-actors, as Boal called them) come onstage to present and try solutions that will help the oppressed to break his/her situation, by playing his/her role. The performance is facilitated by the Joker who acts as the mediator between the audience and the stage.
The final goal is to give to the audience the chance to rehearse in the theatrical stage reactions that will be helpful in real life.
