On August 20th, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153) — a towering figure of the Middle Ages, reforming abbot, eloquent preacher, and Doctor of the Church. Known as the Mellifluous Doctor, St. Bernard inspired the growth of the Cistercian order, founded over 300 monasteries, guided popes and kings, wrote spiritual classics, and preached a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

From his role in resolving papal disputes to writing the Rule of the Knights Templar, St. Bernard shaped both the Church and European history. His teachings on prayer, humility, and Marian devotion — including introducing the Salve Regina at Compline — continue to guide the faithful today.
