It was an absolutely frigid day, but I was heading up to Fremont, Nebraska to check out a store that sells items they've collected from estate sales. The month prior I found some really great film cameras there and pretty much purchased all of them. Unfortunately my second visit wasn't as fruitful.

But I came prepared. I had my Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W290 with me and plenty of warm clothes so I could spend the entire afternoon on the streets of downtown Fremont filming and photographing whatever spoke to me.

I have to say that I really, really enjoyed shooting with the DSC-W290. Much more than I expected to. Setting the exposure compensation to -1/3 of a stop and metering to spot really helped me to be able to protect my highlights and expose for the part of frame that was most important to me (usually the highlights). I set my white balance to Cloudy and got acclimated to the camera rather quickly. It was fast and responsive, and it held up in the cold really well. Zero issues.

But I will say that when I got the photos off the memory card and looked at them more closely in the RNI Films for iPad app, I was a bit disappointed.

There was something a little soulless and clinical about the photos. The image didn't have much character, and I was most disappointed with the amount of distortion there was when shooting at the camera's widest angle. If I shot with this camera again I'd zoom in just a touch to try to eliminate the bowing at the edges of the frame.

Having shot with mostly Canon digicams leading up to this, I found myself longing for those images - especially the images from the cameras that have Canon's Positive Film preset.

Will I shoot with this Cyber-Shot again? Probably not. I'll most likely list it on my eBay store and move it along to someone else.
