Banda in Uttar Pradesh has emerged as India’s hottest district after temperatures soared to a scorching 48.2°C, forcing markets and daily activity to shut down by around 10 AM due to the extreme heatwave conditions. Residents say roads turn deserted by late morning as the intense heat makes outdoor movement nearly impossible.

According to reports, Banda has repeatedly recorded some of the highest temperatures in the country this summer, surpassing even traditionally hotter regions of Rajasthan. Farmers have reportedly shifted work to nighttime hours under floodlights, while labourers are losing wages because working during daytime has become unbearable.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe heatwave warnings and red alerts across several districts in Uttar Pradesh as hot “loo” winds continue sweeping through the region. Officials are also dealing with pressure on electricity infrastructure, with transformers overheating amid rising power demand.

Environmental experts have linked Banda’s worsening heat conditions to deforestation, mining activity, shrinking water bodies and ecological degradation across Bundelkhand. Researchers warn that rising temperatures and loss of green cover could make parts of the region increasingly difficult to live in if long-term environmental damage continues unchecked.
