Getter Robo is a pioneering Japanese mecha franchise co-created by Ken Ishikawa and Go Nagai. Debuting in 1974, the anime television series, produced by Toei Animation, aired on Fuji TV and ran for 51 episodes until 1975. The accompanying manga, serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday, comprised six volumes and was later reprinted by Futabasha.

The storyline revolves around three determined teenagers—Ryoma Nagare, Hayato Jin, and Musashi Tomoe—who pilot specially designed combat jets that combine to form three distinct giant robots: Getter-1, Getter-2, and Getter-3. These machines, powered by Getter Rays, are the brainchild of Prof. Saotome, intended for deep-space exploration but repurposed as Earth's defense against the Dinosaur Empire. This civilization of reptilian humanoids seeks to reclaim the planet and annihilate humanity, having survived underground due to their immunity to Getter Ray radiation.

Getter Robo's success spawned sequels and remakes, notably Getter Robo G, which introduced a new robot piloted by Ryoma, Hayato, and newcomer Benkei Kuruma. The franchise's popularity extended internationally, with adaptations like the American-edited series Starvengers and merchandise licensed by Mattel under the Shogun Warriors toy line.

Revived in 1991 with Getter Robo Go, the franchise continued its legacy with a new team and storyline, further solidifying its influence through video games, merchandise, and references in other anime series like Martian Successor Nadesico. Getter Robo remains a cornerstone of mecha culture, celebrated for its groundbreaking contributions to the genre and enduring popularity among fans worldwide.
