On February 12th, 2020, the MTA New York City Transit Authority officially retired the R42 class of subway rolling stock. One final 10-car train was put together and given light mechanical work up in 207th Street Yard before being run down early in the morning to the NY Transit Museum in Brooklyn for a decommissioning ceremony. Decals were applied at the museum to the north pair in the consist to simulate the feel of the cars when they were first delivered in 1969.
The train then ran from the museum to Euclid Avenue, where it entered public revenue service one final time with Max Diamond as conductor and Steve Davis as motorman, running to Far Rockaway - Mott Avenue, then to Inwood - 207th Street, then back to Euclid Avenue. At the end of the trip, the train was laid up in Pitkin Yard with the rest of the R42 fleet to await further disposition.
Join me as I chase the train around the Rockaways, then ride with NYCT President Andy Byford up toward uptown Manhattan. Enjoy =)
