Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday announced that the Kaladan Multimodal Transport Project between India and Myanmar will be fully operational by 2027.
The project is set to reduce the distance between Aizawl in Mizoram and Kolkata by 700 kilometres. The Sittwe Port in Myanmar is already ready, and work is underway to develop road connectivity to Aizawl.
Sonowal said his ministry is investing ₹1,000 crore to build up the waterways component of the project. He also highlighted the importance of the Northeast in reviving India's economic prosperity, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving transformation through transportation.
Jointly developed by India and Myanmar, the Kaladan project will create a multi-modal transport corridor using sea, river, and road routes to ship cargo from India’s eastern ports to the Northeast through Myanmar.
