I’m old now. So old. I was born in 1837. That’s a long time ago, isn’t it? A long, long time. I’ve lived through so much. Seen so much. But nothing, nothing in all these years has hurt like that day. Like the days that followed. The weeks. The months. The years of not knowing. And then knowing. Oh, when I finally knew, I wished I could go back to not knowing.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. I do that now. My mind, it jumps around. Like a bird that can’t settle. The young man who’s recording this, he asks me to tell it from the beginning. To tell about my life. About Thomas. About that day. So I’ll try. I’ll try to tell it proper.
I was born in a small town. Not much to it. Just farms mostly. My father, he worked the land. Not his own land, mind you. He worked for Mr. Patterson who owned near about everything in our county. My mother, she took in washing. Her hands were always red. Always raw from the lye soap. I remember watching her scrub those clothes. Scrub and scrub. Her knuckles would crack and bleed in the winter. But she never complained. Not once did I hear her complain.
