This is the fifth webinar in a series on facilitation, entitled “Creating Conditions for Compassionate and Resilient Community Work” and was presented by Alyssa Stephens (Cactus Consulting) and Courtney Ngai (Empower Consulting). The focus is on collaborations between academic and community partners and how to avoid having them feel like “missed connections.”
The webinar covers:
• “Setting the stage,” including identifying who should be involved, avoiding “extractive” interactions, viewing differences as strengths and maximizing the benefits of differences, creating a shared language, considering using the Toolbox dialogue process, creating shared goals, considering using a facilitator, shared leadership and useful practices for this
• “The middle,” including norms of collaboration and effective collaboration practices (pausing, paraphrasing, paying attention to self and others, practicing cultural proficiency, probing for specificity, presuming positive intentions, pursuing a balance between advocacy and inquiry, putting ideas on the table and pulling them off), using design thinking principles to consider research and implementation together, building in frequent opportunities for communication
• “The end,” including graceful exits such as acknowledging different time scales, discussing what failure looks like, building capacity for community partners to continue the work; thoroughly considering end-of-project reporting, celebrating success, what/so-what/now-what, appreciative interviews.
The webinar series “The Art & Science of Making Meaningful Moments - Subtle Strategies & Creative Conditions for Effective & Uplifting Facilitation” is hosted by Hannah Love, Founder, Divergent Science LLC and Alyssa Stephens, Cactus Consulting LLC, both in the USA, and the webinar series overall is organised and presented by Kristine Glauber, Program Director, Team Science Core, Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Duke University, North Carolina USA.
The webinar was broadcast and recorded on 14 December 2021. The webinar series is a project of the Interdisciplinary Integration Research Careers Hub (Intereach) at https://www.intereach.org/, which provides mechanisms for communication, education, and collaboration among those interested in a community of practice around the interdisciplinary and integrative functions critical to team science research. Intereach is a special interest group of the International Network of the Science of Team Science
