Women from Māori and Pacific Island backgrounds with type 2 diabetes living in Queensland share stories in managing their health and wellness.
The Pasifika Women’s Diabetes Wellness Program ran for 24 weeks and was co-designed by community members with type 2 diabetes, Pasifika health professionals and university researchers.
Dr Heena Akbar, originally from Fiji, who is a member of the Women’s Wellness Research Collaborative and Senior lecturer at University of Queensland, lead the program, which was sponsored by Diabetes Australia Research Program, Women’s Health Research Translational Network Early Middle Career Grant, Queensland University of Technology and Community Mentors International Inc.
Ms Winnie Niumata, originally from Samoa and a registered nurse and diabetes educator with the Logan Central Community Health Centre, Metro South Health, facilitated workshops and co-presented with Pasifika health professionals as an essential component of the program.
