This video shows the basic concept of stress and strain. Stress is the ratio of force applied on any object to the cross sectional area of the object. There are two main types of stresses that is Normal and bending stresses. In columns we mostly have normal stresses while in beams we mostly have bending stresses. Strain is the ratio of change in length divided by the original length. For more details please watch full video.
