Philly Unpacked is supported by the Philadelphia Journalism Collaborative. Tune in live every first Wednesday of the month at 12:30pm EST!
In this episode, host Jordana explores how increased activity from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is affecting daily life across Philadelphia. From quieter streets in the Italian Market in South Philly to rising fears in Norris Square; immigrant families, workers, and small business owners are navigating difficult decisions about safety, work, school, and community.
Journalist Némesis Mora of 2Puntos joins the conversation to share reporting from immigrant neighborhoods across the city, including how businesses, parents, and organizers are responding to uncertainty and what the long-term impacts could mean for Philadelphia’s economy and communities.
The episode also features a visit to Mole Poblano, a family-owned restaurant in South Philly, to hear directly from a local business about what this moment feels like on the ground.
As Philadelphia approaches its 250th anniversary, the episode asks a bigger question: what does it really mean for our city to be a sanctuary—and how can neighbors show up for one another in these moments of fear and uncertainty?
01:31 Introduction
04:06 Nemesis Mora on the economic impact of ICE presence
14:53 How Mole Poblano and 9th street businesses are adapting
