In this video, we break down the latest India Sri Lanka export and import news focusing on the salt import situation in Sri Lanka in 2025–2026, where over 1,500 containers of imported salt are currently stuck at Sri Lankan ports after importers failed to meet the government-set deadline. Learn how this affects trade, manufacturing, logistics, customs procedures, and the local Sri Lankan market.
In 2025, Sri Lanka faced a salt shortage caused by prolonged rains disrupting domestic salt production. To ease the shortage, the government allowed the import of salt only during a fixed period — from 15 May to 10 June 2025 — under strict rules to stabilise the market and control prices. However, many consignments arrived after the deadline, leading to a backlog of more than 1,500 containers containing imported salt currently detained at the port.
Sri Lanka Customs and the Ministry of Trade have stated that they cannot legally release these containers because they violate the gazette mandating the import window. Instead, the salt must either be re-exported by importers or be treated as abandoned cargo under port regulations. The government has refused to grant post-facto approvals or late clearances, emphasising discipline in trade and import procedures.
Customs officials have pointed out that since importers never took formal delivery of the goods, no customs duties or harbour charges can be applied, and no enforcement action beyond detention is possible at this stage. A separate bulk salt shipment is under investigation for alleged document forgery regarding the loading date.
The video also explains how this situation impacts Sri Lanka’s manufacturing and trade dynamics, including the import of essential commodities and its effect on prices. Despite abundant salt now in the market, the debate continues over regulatory compliance, logistics, and the balance between Sri Lanka’s local salt production and international imports.
👉 Stay tuned as we cover how Sri Lanka’s import controls, port logistics challenges, and India–Sri Lanka export relations shape everyday necessities like salt and influence the broader trade landscape in South Asia.
