The heart of Melbourne turned blue and white as Lonsdale Street came alive for the iconic Antipodes Greek Festival 2026! In this video, we capture the electrifying performance by the Cretan Brotherhood of Melbourne Intermediates Dance Group, and trust me… this dance absolutely stole the show.
Held in the heart of the CBD, the Antipodes Festival is the largest Greek festival in the Southern Hemisphere — drawing over 100,000 people across the weekend. It’s more than just a street party… it’s a celebration of over 125 years of Greek migration to Australia and the incredible impact the Greek community has had on Melbourne’s culture.
A Little History
“Antipodes” literally means “the opposite side of the world” — a nod to Greece being on the other side of the globe from Australia. Melbourne is home to one of the largest Greek populations outside Greece, and this festival proudly showcases that heritage through music, dance, food and tradition.
The Cretan Brotherhood keeps the traditions of Crete alive — with powerful, fast-paced dances that symbolise unity, resilience and pride. Watch the footwork, the spinning, the live music — it’s impossible not to feel the energy.
What To Expect at Antipodes
• Traditional Greek dancing all day (and especially electric at night)
• Live bouzouki music echoing through the city
• Souvlaki, gyros, loukoumades, honey puffs and Greek sweets everywhere
• Cultural stalls, souvenirs and artisan products
• Family-friendly carnival rides and kids activities
• Plate smashing vibes and spontaneous street dancing
At night, Lonsdale Street transforms into a glowing Greek party under the Melbourne skyline — that’s when the atmosphere really hits differently.
Best Time To Visit
• Late afternoon to evening for the best performances and crowd energy
• Come earlier in the day if you want shorter food lines
• Nighttime is perfect for dancing, lights and that proper festival buzz
Whether you’re Greek, Aussie, or just love good food and big energy — this festival is one of Melbourne’s must-experience cultural events.
If you missed it this year… add it to your calendar. Because once you see the Cretan Brotherhood take the stage — you’ll understand why this dance stole the show.
