Another fine autumn day. Perfect for rimfire range time with the Desert Precision Rimfire Benchrest. With a box of lapua Super Long Range I thought I would compare using a muzzle tuner and not using a muzzle tuner at 100 Yards. Also, with Lapua Midas +, I thought the same comparison would be worth doing at 50 Yards.
The weather was great, 50*F. Winds were averaging 3 mph, kind of wispy. The sun was obscured by clouds to some degree, so that was great.
The DPG action screws were torqued to 40-inch pounds which I found through a youtuber recently to be a good setting. A one-piece rest was used for consistency. The bench was cement construction. A ribbon hanging from a tree limb, breeze on my face and tree and shrub movement at the target belt areas served as wind indicators.
The first target was fifty yards with Midas. Starting with 4 groups of 5 rounds with no tuner. This was followed by a 20-round group without tuner. Next was the same set with a tuner placed. On my last range day, I tested several settings of the tuner and found 00 offered possible benefit. It seems very difficult to truly beat the DPG barrel as is without muzzle weight. So that is the setting I used today.
The next target at 100 yards started with three groups of 5 rounds each for Lapua Super Long Range with tuner. After this the tuner was removed, and Midas + was used for one 100-yard group. This was followed by two remaining groups of Super Long Range, again without tuner. The results were interesting and somewhat telling, even with this very small sample.
I will probably 'play' with the tuner again in the spring. For the remainder of the shooting season in my region, the DPG barrel without added weight should do well.
