My class and I watched The Wind That Shakes the Barley, a film directed by Ken Loach and starring Cillian Murphy that won the Palme d'Or in 2006.
The film depicts two brothers in rural Cork from 1920 to 1922, as the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War shape their lives. I prepared students by discussing an overview of Irish historiography (traditional and revisionist) and the importance of The Troubles in Irish historical memory.
