In this video, Dr. Justin Marchegiani discussed why protein digestion is very important for optimal health. When someone has digestion problem and becomes impaired, dysbiosis, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and leaky gut tend to be inevitable if the underlying cause of the problem isn't addressed. Digestion first starts in the stomach, we need enough stomach acid to lower the ph. so the protein-digesting enzymes, pepsin, are activated. When the food in our stomach is digested properly, it is then released to the small intestine. The acid food in the small intestine stimulates a release of bicarbonate to raise the ph. and trigger the gall bladder to release bile and the pancreases to produce enzymes to further help the digestion process. We need protein to have healthy muscles, skin, hair, neurotransmitters for health mood and precursors to hormones. If we don’t have healthy digestion, SIBO, leaky gut and dysbiosis can potentially trigger autoimmune conditions or other degenerative conditions like hypothyroidism, poor mood, poor memory, fatigue and other hormonal imbalances.
