In this experiment, 2 persons pull the rope from 2 ends in opposite directions. Each student pulls the rope with a force of 100N. There are two action/reaction pairs and the rope is in static equilibrium. The tension in the rope—the pulling forces will also be 100N.
Rope exert forces at both ends. The force with which they pull—and thus the force pulling on them at each end—is the tension in the rope. Tension is not the sum of the pulling forces.
