On February 24, 1955, Steven Paul Jobs was born in San Francisco, California. His unmarried biological parents, Abdulfattah Jandali and Joanne Schieble, gave him up for adoption. Paul and Clara Jobs, a lower-middle-class couple who later relocated to the suburb of Mountain View, adopted Steve. In the early 1950s, the Santa Clara county, located south of the Bay Area, gained the name Silicon Valley as a result of the influx of numerous semiconductor firms. Because of this, young Steve Jobs grew up in a neighborhood where engineers spent their weekends working on electronics and other gadgets in their garages. As he grew up, this influenced his interest in the subject. At the age of 13, he met Stephen Wozniak, an electrical genius and unrepentant prankster who would go on to become one of the most significant people in his life. When Steve Jobs was old enough to attend college five years later, he told his parents that he wanted to go to Reed College, a pricey liberal arts school in northern Oregon. The poor couple had made a promise to their son’s biological parents that he would have a college education, so they gave in even though the tuition costs were prohibitive. Steve only attended Reed for one semester before leaving because his interests in eastern philosophy, fruitarian diets, and LSD were greater than those of his classes. He relocated to a hippy commune in Oregon, where growing apples was his primary occupation. Steve went back to California to seek for work a few months later. He was hired by the fledgling video game company Atari, and he used his salary to travel to India with Dan Kottke, a friend from college, to “seek enlightenment.” He returned rather dejected and began to show more interest in his friend Woz’s new endeavors.
