Memorial Tunnels (I-70)

​The Veterans Memorial Tunnels are a pair of tunnels located on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs, Colorado, about 30 miles west of Denver in Clear Creek County. They are a critical choke point on the I-70 mountain corridor, leading to the state's popular ski resorts and the Continental Divide.

​The tunnels were originally constructed in the early 1960s as part of the expansion of US Highway 6 and US Highway 40, which later became I-70.

​Widening Project (2013-2014): Due to chronic traffic congestion and bottlenecks, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) undertook a massive project to widen the tunnels.
​The eastbound bore was completed and widened in 2013 to accommodate a third express lane.
​The westbound bore was completed in 2014, widened to accommodate a future third lane. The construction involved controlled blasting to open up the tunnels while preserving the rock above.

​Official Renaming (2015): The tunnels were officially renamed the Veterans Memorial Tunnels on September 11, 2015, following a bill passed by the Colorado State Legislature in April 2015.
​The renaming was done to recognize and remember the nation's military veterans and their service. The September 11th date was chosen to honor those who have served and sacrificed.
