Working with parents who push back, challenge you, or don’t fully trust your recommendations can be one of the most difficult parts of supporting a child.
In this video, I break down how to work with resistant or combative parents in a way that builds trust and alliance rather than escalating conflict. These are the parents who show up and care about their child, but may question everything, challenge your expertise, or strongly advocate for their own perspective.
Instead of seeing resistance as a barrier, we can look deeper at the parent’s fears, experiences, and motivations to better understand where the tension is coming from.
When we shift how we approach these conversations, we can often transform resistance into collaboration.
In this video you'll learn:
• How to understand the psychology behind resistant parents
• How to reframe resistance so it doesn’t become a power struggle
• Ways to build alliance while still maintaining professional boundaries
⚠️ Important: This video focuses on engaged parents who may be defensive or combative, not parents who are completely disengaged. I’ll be creating a separate video on how to work with disengaged parents soon.
If you’re a school psychologist, therapist, educator, or clinician, this conversation will help you navigate difficult parent interactions while still advocating effectively for children.
