Are there rules in a sober living home?

The most basic rule at a sober living home is abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Typically, this is enforced via random drug testing. However, I would say that for someone living in a sober living home, the most important thing to remember is that they are learning how to live their life differently.

And in so doing, everything has to change about how they live their life. You need new eating habits and new sleeping habits. You learn to pray and meditate. You start working a 12-step program, and you get new hobbies and new friends. Everything has to change because the old behavior is what brought you to treatment.

If someone goes back to their old environment, with no rules, your chances of a healthy recovery are abysmal. So the rules are in place to facilitate this healthy behavior change.

When you live in a highly structured sober living community, you soon realize that every single thing that you do affects everyone else in the house. You can’t simply make a meal for yourself and leave a mess for the next house member to clean up. This instills accountability and helps make the recovering addict aware (in a gentle yet boundary-oriented way) that the world doesn’t revolve around them.

If you’re in your active addiction, it’s all about you. This changes when you embark on recovery. So the rules of sober living are generally geared to facilitate your program of recovery. It’s usually 12-Step, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be SMART recovery, refuge recovery, or one of the other recovery programs.

By working a program – ‘doing the work’ as they say – you change, you grow, and you stay sober. The rules of sober living aren’t ever draconian in the sense that the home wants to force you into submission. The sober living wants to see you succeed in re-entering daily life on healthy terms, and so the community buys into the rules and upholds them to create a culture of recovery that ensures that you never need to feel alone in your journey of recovery.

The rules that are in place are there for this reason – and in my experience, they yield results and help create a warm climate of healthy recovery for all the sober living residents..
