Is "trying" to hit it straight actually making you crooked?
In today’s Net Lab Experiment, I’m testing a counter-intuitive golf drill my coach gave me to master club path and face alignment. Instead of chasing the center line from ball one, we are leaning into the extremes to find the middle.
🔬 The Experiment: The 18-Ball Drill
The goal is to use deliberate exaggeration to "calibrate" the feel of the clubface. We break 18 balls into three distinct phases:
Phase 1: 6 balls pushed deliberately to the right.
Phase 2: 6 balls pushed deliberately to the left.
Phase 3: 6 balls aimed dead straight.
📈 The Theory
By feeling the exaggerated "wrong" moves, your brain and body can more easily identify the "right" move in the center. It’s about finding the boundaries of your swing to gain total control over your start line.
As a high-handicapper returning to the game, I’m finding that these "nerdy" practice systems are far more effective than just hitting a bucket of balls into the dark.

🏌️♂️ Join the Lab
I'm a mid-40s golfer on a mission to see how good I can get after 20 years away. From my home "Net Lab" to the links of the Scottish Highlands, I’m documenting the experiments, the data, and the struggles.
Listen to the Podcast: Check out "Both Sides of Par" where I sit down with my low-handicap partner, Ross, to discuss practice diaries, gear, and golf from both ends of the handicap spectrum.
