Dr Julie Oswald is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. She is also the Director of the University of St Andrews Vertically Integrated Projects Programme and the Deputy Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute. Her research focuses on the acoustic signals to communicate information such as species identity in dolphins and the development of acoustic species classifiers. She was recently awarded the Allen Institute Conservation Technology Award for her work on using AI to identify dolphin species in acoustic recordings.
In this talk Dr Oswald will discuss her latest work on the ways in which we can use sound to study marine mammals, how we overcome challenges such as identifying species in acoustic recordings using machine learning methods, and what we have learned from applying these methods to passive acoustic recordings from marine mammals.
