The 1:2 brewing ratio at 30s brew time is just a guideline.
You do not need distribution or WDT tools, it just adds consistency.
Make sure to tamp as level as possible. An uneven tamp will lead to uneven extraction.
Dial in your coffee daily, when switching beans to a different roast date, when switching to another bean and when something feels off. Coffee changes over time so your recipe should too.
With a naked portafilter, pull espresso into a container before transferring it into the cup to minimize splashes onto the cup.
You can use any coffee beans, not just "espresso" branded beans.
Always tweak your recipe according to its taste and not how it looks. If it tastes sour, extract more. If it tastes bitter, extract less.
