Salt production in Vedaranyam, one of Tamil Nadu’s major salt-producing regions, has begun to recover after months of disruption caused by unseasonal rains.
Workers in the coastal town of Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu say nearly 70 percent of salt pans have resumed operations as strong summer sunlight returns, allowing salt crystallisation to restart.
Salt pan workers said production had come to a halt for nearly six months due to persistent rains that flooded the pans and repeatedly disrupted attempts to restart the season. Gradually, harvesting has begun again in some areas, though several pans are still waiting for favourable conditions to resume full production.
Workers are currently busy harvesting fresh salt and packing iodised salt into small retail packets as well as large sacks for bulk transportation. According to workers, prices are currently around Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per tonne.
The Vedaranyam region produces about six lakh tonnes of salt annually, including both edible and industrial-grade salt. Small-scale producers contribute roughly two lakh tonnes to the total annual output.
