Taking the train from Ledbury to Birmingham, I have to say that West Midlands Trains proved very punctual yet again!
Then, starting from the Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, I rode the Brompton the short distance to the junction with the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal.
After passing through its 24 locks, I reached Salford Junction, some 3.5 miles later.
The 24 locks are split into two flights:- the Farmers Bridge Flight (13) and then the Aston Flight (11). 'Farmers Bridge' includes a section of locks which are virtually 'underground' - i.e. buildings have been built over them, which makes for a very dramatic passage after lock 9!
Aston locks are more conventional in design and the canal opens out quite noticeably, with some beautiful bridges, before reaching Salford Junction, which is immediately underneath the elevated M6 motorway. At the junction, the canal meets the Tame Valley Canal, and there's also a short section which goes down to the Grand Union.
All in all, it was a hugely interesting ride, albeit quite short, and the industrial feel, along with being in the heart of a great city, contrasts enormously with the likes of the Llangollen and Mon' & Brec' canals.
It was well worth the visit and I hope you'll enjoy seeing the video! By the way, if you do enjoy it, then please consider subscribing - it really helps me to grow the channel!
