First, Enoch fasted, and was taken with the flesh to heaven, and even until now he is alive. Noah fasted, and was delivered from the flood, with the children born of him, from whose tribe the present world came to be. Abraham likewise fasted, and was called the friend of God, becoming the father of all prophets and patriarchs. Moses, having been purified by fasting, conversed with God face to Face, and his face shone like the sun. Elijah fasted, and brought down fire from heaven and obtained rain from God for the people. The prophet Daniel through fasting subdued the lions, and was called a man of desires. Joshua the son of Nun, having fasted, conquered foreigners and stopped the sun from its course. And the three youths who were thrown into the fiery furnace, through fasting and prayers extinguished the fire. The Ninevites fasted, and transformed God's anger into gentleness. Many also in the New Law were sanctified by fasting, and through prayers, and humility, and almsgiving drew near to God. For fasting that does not have humility is like a temple without a roof, and like a leaky vessel, so also is fasting without humility. And for one who fasts, but does not practice almsgiving, there is little benefit.
