This week for Research Friday, we are diving into a fascinating look at the evolving role of the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
Research Fellow Kayla Riel joins us to discuss a recent study conducted by the National Registry of EMTs Research Team. While the National Scope of Practice traditionally limits EMRs to basic care on scene, our analysis of over 270,000 activations shows they are playing a significant role in patient transport.
Kayla recently presented this research poster at the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) annual meeting, sparking important conversations about the future of EMS transport dynamics.
Key Findings from the Study:
EMRs Transport!: EMRs are the highest-level Clinician during ambulance transports for more than 250,000 patients.
Patient Transports: Most of these transports are not 9-1-1 emergencies. Instead, EMRs are primarily assisting with interfacility transfers and transporting stable, predetermined patients from health care facilities.
Routine Care: During these transports, EMRs continue to provide essential care, such as monitoring vital signs and administering oxygen.
Understanding these patterns is vital as we consider how training standards and local protocols might need to adapt to support the expanded role of the EMR Clinician.
