This week a group of friends gathered at Te Whare Roimata to farewell Suzie. This was an occasion to remember and to celebrate a person of courage who had searched her whole life for acceptance and a place to call home.
When I first met Suzie, she was known as Robin, and he was part of a community group repairing and then gifting bikes to those in need. Robin was an extraordinary individual, known to many in his and her role as a parking attendant at the Good Spot Carpark in central Christchurch.
I was lucky enough to visit Suzie a few weeks before her death and see the contentment she had found leaving Robin behind and embracing the person she really wanted to be. Courage and hope come in many different forms, judgement on the other hand is often destructive. I hope that the next time I rush to judgement, I manage to pause, think of Suzie and power of gentle acceptance.
