Chinese fan palm (Livistona chinensis) is a gorgeous subtropical poem that eventually will grow a trunk, but it takes probably decades. These are one of my favorite palms
Native range:
Southeast China (Yunnan/ Sichuan region)
Light and sun: part sun to shade: BUT, CAN tolerate more sun once it is a large tree!
Water and humidity: in pots, they need to be kept moist and don’t tolerate too much drought, however, in the ground, your mileage may vary, once established, they might be more drought tolerant in the ground.
Pot size and fertility: 15” or bigger: they do tolerate being root bound if you’re keeping up on watering. Best to fertilize with organic matter like compost or an organic all-purpose fertilizer. While these palms would also benefit from a specialty palm fertilizer, they do not need to have that, since they’re so commonly grown.
Cold tolerance: although listed to zone nine, that is for it to grow into a large trunking palm tree. I think as a more of a shrub, you can have these be hardy in zone 7B. Moore is discussed in the video but you’ll have to stay tuned for that.
Final thoughts: an absolutely beautiful palm, I don’t keep them as a house plant over the winter, I keep them dormant in a cool room, between 35 and 55°F. They can attract past even with the organic care indoors because probably they don’t like the low humidity. However, since they are cold tolerant, the dormant. Over the winter is probably the best tactic to keep them year over year.
