Call description: 5th Alarm Residential Structure Fire
Additional information: A retired police officer was getting coffee at approximately 10:00 AM when he noticed smoke rising from the residence at 205 Main St in Townsend MA. He called 911, and fire crews were dispatched to the location. Within 10 minutes, command called for a 3rd alarm. The homeowner was not home at the time, but their two pets were trapped inside the house. Luckily firefighters were able to rescue the dog and rabbit from the home. The dog was struggling to breathe after being rescued, but was treated on scene by animal rescue and by that time it was deemed uninjured. Conditions deteriorated as the first floor began to cave in, and then the second floor collapsed. At this time, the call was upgraded to a 5th alarm. Crews were evacuated and forced to go defensive with master streams for about 30 minutes before re-entering the building. The Townsend fire chief says another problem was the age of the house, as it was built years ago. The house was a total loss, and one family was displaced in the fire. Two firefighters were injured, one was treated on scene with a cut to the finger, and another was transported to the hospital with heat related injuries. Overall, fire crews were on scene for almost 8 hours, and it took companies from 14 different towns to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but the fire marshal's office is investigating.
