Recovering Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat was far more complex than a normal wreckage recovery. No diver could reach that depth, so the Navy had to use remote manipulators, lights, cameras, and a precision deep-water hoist plan to thread lifting cables through exposed engine-mount structures. During the ascent, the primary lift lines snapped twice under extreme dynamic strain, forcing the team to regain control before continuing. Instead of risking catastrophic damage with a crane swing, the wreck was guided into USS White Sands using a floating dry dock method that let the aircraft settle safely as water drained away.
