The Huntington’s exhibition “The Reformation: From the Word to the World” includes a unique manuscript by a 16th-century Protestant. The book is a private, hand written version of the entire 1559 Book of Common Prayer. But what makes it truly unique is the large number of medieval manuscripts that were destroyed and used to decorate this volume.
Vanessa Wilkie, the William A. Moffett Curator of Medieval Manuscripts and British History at The Huntington, and the curator of the exhibition, explains what went into the creation of this unique act of piety and what it can tell us about how the Reformation affected the lives of individual parishioners.
