The copper shortage isn't really about empty mines. It's about supply chains, geology, and geopolitics.
Every EV needs 4x more copper than a gas car. Wind, solar, grids, data centers running AI — all burn through copper. By 2030 the world will need 50% more copper than it produces today. By 2050, double.
The first instinct is to mine more. But new copper mines take 10–20 years from discovery to production. The pipeline is empty. The mines we have are aging, grades dropping.
And the geography is brutal. Most reserves sit in Chile, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. China controls 50% of global refining capacity.
The energy transition depends on geology. But it depends even more on geopolitics.
The future may run on electricity. But electricity runs on copper.
