Today we look at how to identify Jabulani! Born in 1997, Jabulani was the first orphan to be integrated into the elephant herd. The herd has been known as the Jabulani herd ever since.
Now 25 years old, Jabulani is one of the older bulls of the herd. He has a large and fairly slender body, although he’s not as slender as Fishan. One of the easiest ways to identify Jabulani is by looking at his back, which has quite a prominent slope. The other elephants tend to have backs that look level or rounded.
There are several small notches and tears along the edges of both of Jabulani’s ears. This gives his ears a “jagged” look. His ears are not very big.
Another easy way to identify Jabulani is by looking at his eye sockets. His eye sockets seem to be almost triangular in shape, which makes him look a bit confused or concerned. See if you can spot the triangles above Jabulani’s eyes.
Jabulani’s tusks are thick and point outward, and they are shorter than those of the other older bulls. In this video, you can see Jabulani standing next to Sebakwe (who has long, prominently curved tusks) and Somopane (who has long, slightly curved tusks). Jabulani’s tusks are closer to Fishan’s tusks in length, but are not as thick as his. This is completely normal, as Jabulani is quite a few years younger than Sebakwe, Somopane, and Fishan.
Jabulani has long tail hair. Until recently, he had long hair on both sides of his tail. However, Sebakwe recently pulled out the hair on one side of Jabulani’s tail, and Jabulani now only has hair on one side of his tail. The clips we used for this video were taken before Jabulani’s tail hair was pulled out.
See if you can start to identify Jabulani among the other elephants in our videos!
