An exceptional and unique astronomical clock built by Constantin Louis Detouche and presented in 1855 for the first Universal Exhibition in Paris, where it won the Gold medal that year.
Constantin Louis Detouche, a fine and ingenious maker, had his premises at Rue de Venise in the 1820's and then moved to Rue Saint-Martin. He devised many interesting horological mechanisms in association with Robert Houdin, Brisbart Gobert and Oudin. He took an early interest in electrical horology and in 1851 patented an electro-magnetic clock.
Constantin-Louis Detouche was clockmaker to the French emperor, the City of Paris and the Rome observatory.
The Detouche premises in the rue Saint-Martin, Paris, had workshops covering every aspect of watchmaking and work in precious metals. He won many industrial rewards and honours and contributed to the reputation of French industry.
The clock was purchased by François-Paul Journe completely disassembled in boxes. The international watch museum (MIH) in La Chaux-de-Fonds took three years to restore the clock to its former splendour.
