When I was sixteen, I learned this pattern by separating what the thumb was doing from what the fingers were doing, then slowly putting them back together. I had to concentrate so hard that I went to my sister’s room and asked her to listen and tell me if I was doing it right.

I love this song in a very fundamental way. It’s a building block of my relationship with music. The band adds so much to this recording that I’m not sure it could ever be improved upon. That said, I like to imagine the version John might have played for Prudence—alone, playing from outside her door.
