Seeking solutions for widespread unemployment during the Great Depression, the U.S. government embarked on New Deal programs that commissioned out-of-work artists. These initiatives produced paintings, sculptures, and murals, some of which still adorn public buildings today. Through these projects, the U.S. sought to define a national aesthetic rooted in shared values and a unified visual culture.
“Curator’s Choice” is a regular series that invites audiences behind the scenes with Wolfsonian curators and special guests, offering deeper insight into the collection and a chance to engage with museum insiders.
In “Curator’s Choice: New Deal,” Wolfsonian curator Lea Nickless is joined by Marianne Lamonaca, former associate director and now FIU program director of The Humanities Edge, for a deep dive into New Deal-era works featured in “The Big World: Alternative Landscapes in the Modern Era.” Together, they reflect on the New Deal’s artistic legacy and national impact.
