Between the early-16th and mid-18th centuries, an estimated 4,000-6,000 people were accused and 2,500 executed, 300 of them right here in Edinburgh.

The rate of accusations in Scotland was much higher than the rest of Europe, and rate of executions over 100x that of the Salem Witch Trials.

In Edinburgh, witches—mainly women—were executed at Edinburgh Castle, on Grassmarket, and in Leith. Today, a small and controversial Witches Well commemorates those who were affected by the Scottish Witch Trials.
