During the West Somerset Railway Spring Gala a rather unusual visitor ran on the line. A US interloper, USATC S160 No.6046 was a guest engine during the gala providing some visitors to the line a bit of American flavour running on British railway metals.
US Army Transportation Corps S160 6046 was built at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia 1945 and was one of several hundred S160's to be shipped straight to France to help with the war effort. After World War II ended, the loco was sent to Hungarian State Railways and worked the majority of working life there. Saved and preserved the locomotive returned to UK metals and since returned to steam in 2012 for a new lease of life.
In this video we see 6046 run up and down the WSR with some fine soundtracks involved including a lovely American whistle tone.
I admit I've always been a huge admirer of North American designed steam locomotives. They're pretty unique and have some character in them.
